Pinwheel is a custom-designed, prefabricated log house located on the hills around Lake Maggiore, Italy, built and furnished in just six months. A gazebo is located in the typical oak forest of the lake area bordering Switzerland. It is a project shaped by the boundary and terrain of the slope, where the suitable buildable area corresponds to the natural terrace field in the narrowest part of the site.
The design complies with the constraints of the building and the needs of the living area facing the lake valley. A contour line parallel to the slope on one side, the simple geometric shape of the pentagon results in a complex structure of constraints and necessities.
As a single-storey loft with a small basement, this holiday home is centered around the plan, corresponding to circular skylights and descending stairs, making it a space-saving solution since there is no corridor. The study, living room and kitchen area share the same open space, while the two bedrooms and two bathrooms are the only physical partitions on the upper level. The film room, storage room and technical room are arranged around the lower level of the central staircase.
The above-ground building is a wooden frame prefabricated system assembled on site in just one week, installed on top of the existing poured concrete on the ground floor. The elevation is a combination of white concrete panel cladding and composite aluminum shutters of different sizes, the living area has a large frame opening, and the bedroom and bathroom have smaller frame openings. Located in the southwest corner of the building, the living room has a square sliding window facing the valley, while the study area has a second, wider opening to the white gravel outdoor seating area. The interior is decorated with white concrete floors and white whitewashed walls, and all spaces are decorated in white tones.
The circular edges of the building emphasize the continuity of the enclosure structure between the five sides, and the only alternation of the vertical fins gives the building a windmill appearance. The only sign in the landscape next to the building is the white gravel shape that connects the narrow country road to the building, leaving a parking space on the east and an outdoor seating area on the west. The basic design guideline is to minimize maintenance costs and utility costs, while prefabricated and highly insulated wooden structures are the first step towards achieving the goal. Radiated floor heating and hot water are produced by an electric heat pump system and powered by a small remote photovoltaic farm.
