Studio Home is a compact one-bedroom home that is an exploration of small-scale, affordability, and sustainable living. The area of the house is only 42 ㎡, the structure is compact, similar to a one-room apartment. However, although it is small in size, its design is very suitable for living. For a couple, it is a comfortable home that achieves a high level of habitability without compromise.

The studio house was built on leased land by the owner on a meager budget of NZD15,000 (about RMB 64 million), saving the upfront costs of purchasing the site. Therefore, the house needs to be moveable so that it is easy to move after the lease expires, which is also a physical limitation of the house. William Samuels Architects developed a series of interconnected modules, each of which can be disassembled from the base and moved separately within the maximum size range of the trailer. To create a greater sense of space in narrow modules, they are connected by an open “windmill” layout, each functional space in the dwelling is connected to a larger central area, forming a series of spaces of shared volume. Modules can also be added later if needed to increase bedrooms, workspaces, or other areas. The current form of housing is by no means the final entity, but a reflection of the needs of the moment and is likely to evolve and evolve as the needs change.

The main sense of form is that high arched ceilings are set in each module. Large arched windows on both ends of each arch allow you to shine light and see the canopy while maintaining privacy with your neighbors. The window frame is hidden in the cavity of the wall, forming an opening or opening at the end of each arch. The attic above the bathroom in the central location of the barrel-shaped dome provides an auxiliary living space, which is a comfortable reading room with open views. This item uses natural materials as much as possible and does not use any paint. Despite its small size, Studio Home tries to solve some big problems. As an exploration of affordable home buying, a more sustainable way of building, and proof of the affordability of smaller spaces, this house is an example of another way of life and a radical upheaval in the way we think about “home.”
