THIS COMPACT EDWARDIAN COURTYARD VILLA IN PRALAND NEEDS A DRAMATIC INTERIOR RECONFIGURATION. The Melanie Beynon Architecture & Design team calls for an open, streamlined, modern aesthetic and maximised use of shared spaces for entertainment and home life.

Twenty years ago, the villa had an extension section. Here, designers propose to twist the past and turn the kitchen into a living and entertainment area. From previous experience in these narrow homes, you can see the opportunity to replan kitchen, living and dining spaces, allowing spacious, well-lit living areas to be connected to the green tree-lined outdoor patio. Between the kitchen and living space, the designer hides a set of sliding panels to create a passive partition to manage noise and privacy when needed. Children can gather in the living space to watch TV, while parents can have fun on the kitchen island at the same time without hearing interference.

The entire custom fine woodwork provides a powerful kitchen, the kitchen extends to the living space, with hidden bar and fridge drawer being the ultimate entertainment area. The soft material palette, combined with contrasting monochrome elements, personalized stone and nickel-plated fixtures, blends well with the new modern feel of the home.

THE LONG ELEVATION IS CONNECTED TO THE OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT PLATFORM THROUGH A LARGE OPENING IN THE BACK TO LET IN THE SUN. Large skylights are found along the channel ceiling, allowing you to glimpse the sky and the natural light of the north. The laundry room is its own area, facing a long corridor near the entrance to the main bathroom. Minimize the penetration of the south elevation, and daylight again fills the bathroom with natural light.
