The Lanaudière Residence is a typical stone duplex of the early 20th century Montreal Plateau Royal residential area, remodeled by architect Michael Godmer. Most importantly, the project must preserve the memory and history of the building, since the client inherited the house from her mother. A simple method was chosen to enable Michael Godmer to make the most of existing floor space so that by the time they are in their 30s, the owners and their two dogs can enjoy the space for many years to come.
THE PROJECT WAS FIRST CONSULTED TO ADDRESS SOME DESIGN ISSUES, SUCH AS STORING OR UPDATING KITCHEN AND INTERIOR FURNITURE TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT. Customers also want more space and dream of opening the house to the outside. The initial idea was to dig a basement and build a passage, which was considered too complex and expensive due to structural reasons. To simplify the work, it was decided to incorporate the second floor unit into the project. Therefore, the total area of the building is maximized, meeting the requirements of the initial presentation, and the limitations of the building are also fully respected.
The new ground floor layout retains the original structural framework while creating two distinct spaces: a storage room near the entrance, a dressing room and a second-level kitchen, one room and another living room. The new layout also includes a central corridor that corresponds to the original floor layout. The limited opening is set against a white oak background, contrasting with a variety of dark green limes and providing some space separation. The contrast of colors, textures and materials is bright and harmoniously blended throughout the space, ensuring balance with the rest of the original architectural elements.
