It's not uncommon for architects to receive unusual design needs presentations when designing a client's dream home. In the case of Office Alex Nicholls, a familiar client commissioned the firm to merge two penthouse suites in Melbourne, with the architect merging two large spaces into one luxurious generational family home. The Elsternwick Apartments are spread over three floors and are a combination space of two initially separately planned penthouse apartments.
The design requirement of the customer is to leave enough space for the intergenerational family, while providing the option of independent space when needed. The visible separation of the apartment has been planned by the existing elevator well and escape stairs located in the center. The elevator opposite is a bookshelf — one of the main concepts that designers have adopted throughout the apartment. An impressive wooden shelf that effortlessly spans the entire interior space, displaying art, books and crafts collected over the years. Materials for storage appear in other rooms to maintain consistency while bringing warmth to the entire apartment—breaking with the cool white aesthetic often associated with apartments.
