Set in a quiet seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula, a unique take on coastal housing. Eastop Architects conceived Blairgowrie House as a minimalist design expression, combining minimal expressions of materials to stratify and expand the space and arrange unexpected moments between its buildings, interiors and windswept coastal views.
The house is located on a narrow piece of land on the Mornington Peninsula. On one side of the suburb is the calm waters of Port Phillip and on the other is the turbulent waves of the Bass Strait. For a rugged coastal environment, the homes are located in a fairly dense suburb. The client presented to Eastop Architects as much as possible to avoid the suburban environment to create a truly private and secluded low-maintenance home. With a studio that creates layers, textures and quality, exquisite brands provide physical and emotional sanctuary for families vacationing there.
The entrance channel is created in a similar way. From the street, the house is empty, low and featureless. A discreet opening opens up an interior space experience designed to make you feel bigger than it actually is. The change in floor gives the house volume and allows the experience of calm space to span several different areas. From the corridor to the rooms and courtyards that follow, open to a lush garden border. Each separate area is connected to the other areas through long lines of vision and borrowed views, enhancing the sense of space and tightly intertwining with the landscape. The main living area appears in the shared dining and kitchen area, which is a bit like a gazebo — its walls slide and move down the side passage to the garden. When opened, residents are still blocked by the roof line and can dine at the dining table, there is a feeling of being open.
This thoughtful landscape engagement is the foundation of project success and a hallmark of Eastop Architects overall practice. “We really took the house apart, allowing the view to expand the space as much as possible,” recalls the designer. “We designed the landscape for the house. As a studio, we think of landscape, architecture, and interior design as this blur of thought and space as a whole. This is why this project is successful, because the interior design draws on the landscape and the landscape draws on interior design and architecture.
This project is an exploration of the effects of simple material palettes. Brick and granite occupy a place in the design; however, wood and concrete are used as the main materials. One is soft and operable; the other is rigid and permanent, forming a shell and a foundation. Together they provide functionality, interaction and balance.
Material constraints embody a sense of timelessness that enables homes to play out the possibilities of spatial experiences, expanding the space through dialogue between architectural forms and landscapes to promote physical and emotional rest. Eastop Architects uses all the elements and skills they have mastered to design an immersive environment, a home where quiet spaces can be easily found.
