Mossy Point House is a residence located in Mossy Point, Australia, designed by Edition Office. The exterior is covered with cement panels, reflecting the smooth silvery bark of the mottled eucalyptus surrounding the property, as well as the small fibre shed that formerly occupied the site. Although it looks like a single-story structure, the home sits on a parallel block wall roof, striking a balance between the built environment, nature and modern living standards. The interior displays a uniform mix of plywood and stain laminate flooring, creating a tranquil atmosphere, with evenly proportioned spaces utilizing natural light to emphasize the family's connection to the outdoors.
An innovative roof cutout serves as a covered outdoor dining area and a central pivot point in the house, separating the social area from the private space. This design feature also maximizes the efficiency of space utilization and construction costs. Sturdy railings along the north outdoor platform obscure neighboring homes, drawing people's attention to spotted eucalyptus trees and the winding Tomaga River. The element also ensures indoor privacy while encouraging interaction with neighbors on the way to the waters. The single-story layout of the bathroom and carefully selected stainless steel details adapt to the customer's late Parkinson's disease, enabling dignified on-site nursing and home care.
The living spaces at Mossy Point House are carefully positioned to respect neighboring properties and benefit from ample sunshine. The arrangement also takes into account the protection of existing spotted eucalyptus trees, removing only two unhealthy trees. Low-cost, flexible materials dominate the building, with sustainably sourced wood as the main structural and decorative element. Reused edging material from the exterior trim of the kitchen storage shelves, the house relies entirely on ceiling fans for cooling, further embodying the project's eco-friendly approach.
