Located in the riverside suburb of Pianura Padana, Italy, Villa Orizzonte strives to blend in as much as possible with the surrounding environment. The new building is designed as an extended and long line that blends into the landscape, blending its presence with the natural environment into a strong and powerful horizontal pose. The roof is considered the fifth elevation of the building, is a uniform element of all volumes, characterized by defining the balance of solids and voids in the internal and external areas. Through its four voids, it allows light to penetrate and break the rhythm of the space.
Buildings are conceptually divided into two functional masses. The first is completely covered in stone and has a service area, garage and a small office. The second lighter space includes a kitchen and living room, sleeping and dining area, with large sliding windows around it, transforming the house into an open terrace overlooking the garden. The whole building is considered to be a perforated box, opening into a small private courtyard, like a fragment of a family landscape. Through the house is an ever-changing walkway where volumes are visually connected, materials and plantings are integrated.
Developed according to sustainable building standards, the project combines active and passive bioclimatic systems to ensure comfortable indoor climate conditions and minimize energy consumption. The south-facing porches promote cross ventilation and lower the internal temperature. The opening in the roof forms a Mediterranean garden, cultivates carpets and provides sun protection in the summer. Close proximity to water sources creates a favorable microclimate in the warm season. All vertical surfaces are constructed using a dry masonry system to reduce the use of harmful solvents and minimize the environmental impact of the building. Wood and microcement floors enrich the minimalist atmosphere of the interior space, leaving room for a wide view of the surrounding outdoor area.
