Set in the New South Wales region, this house celebrates the strength and feel of concrete structures, cleverly blending northern views with woodland to embrace the beauty of the countryside wholeheartedly.
Tecture's mission is to design a sturdy family home that resists the threat of jungle fires from neighboring parks while providing striking architectural performance. Concrete was requested as the primary material, prompting the design team to explore new construction methods and design sensitivities.
Blade House is set in an already built residence and maintains a private street image — a combination of concrete and wood. Clients active lifestyles require a large garage to store their boats, caravans, motorcycles and cars, and Tecture wraps these spaces with wood as a continuation of the facade. A half-high retaining wall further obscures the garage's presence, bringing the focus to the home's eye-catching concrete walls.
Although the living space is linear, the full-glass, operable elevations open to wide terraces on both south and north sides, extending the quality of the space. The north-facing winter terrace offers warm natural light, while the spacious summer terrace with barbecue base and fireplace creates a warm entertaining environment overlooking the pool and the forest in the distance. Inside, the house's rugged concrete walls are used as the main material, continuing the performance of the building. The layering of locally sourced soft wood in the ceilings and fine woodwork adds warmth to the palette.
