Quod Architects designed this villa for ideal family living, which is environmentally sustainable and adapts to our tropical climate. Since the owner loves gardening and the breeze and encourages interaction between family members, this villa was conceived to be open to the natural environment.
It gives residents a feeling of being outdoors, and in fact, they get shelter in their homes and maximizes family common areas while providing privacy for bedrooms. Quod Architects also designed a 12-meter-high tree that extends from the one-story car porch area to the terrace on the second floor, connecting to the family area. From the family area on the second floor you can see the crown of the tree, as if you were outdoors.
Quod Architects retained the basement, one and two story structure of the original house and added a floor above. The original design is not suitable for modern life. It is very closed and dark with almost no windows. The ceiling height is also low, and the kitchen and dining areas are on different floors. The designer created a two-volume dining area next to the kitchen in the basement and allowed the use of a wide and magnificent staircase from the ground living room. This allows for plenty of cross ventilation and makes it feel more spacious and pleasant. The staircase is not only a circulation space, but also a gathering space where people can sit down and socialize during large gatherings. The second and third floors are more private space — family areas and bedrooms. On the second floor where the master bedroom is located, there is a main staircase leading to the third floor. Another external staircase leads from the family area to the inner balcony, so it is as if walking outdoors, blurring the boundaries of the interior and exterior.
To build this open-air villa, Quod Architects used plenty of natural wood, washed pebbles and rough-textured interior wall paint finishes. These are materials commonly used outdoors, but designers bring them indoors to add a touch of solidity.
