This contemporary residence in Hawthorn East, Melbourne, is a high-end heritage makeover. The project's designer, Adrian Amore, begins to inject new life into Edwardian homes and shares insights into the evolution of this fascinating transformation.

“The owners renovated their house in the early 2000s,” explains Adrian. “The interior has signs of wear and feels outdated. Their taste has also changed,”. A treasured memory of more than forty years spent in this house, two owners in their seventies tried to update their space while retaining its basic features. The presentation evolves through an iterative design process that gradually reveals opportunities for more important spatial potential. The final scope involves the renovation of the ground floor — kitchen, dining and living areas, formal lounge and restaurant, and master bedroom, suite, study and dressing room.

Adrian Amore leverages existing rooms and gardens to open up space for a greater sense of physical and visual connection, improved circulation and a richer spatial atmosphere. One of the most striking places is the central dining area, which was previously underutilized and isolated from the outside. Through clever interventions, including the introduction of a bar area and banquet seating, Adrian successfully transformed the space into a vibrant hub and flowed into adjacent rooms.

The floor-to-ceiling windows introduce natural light, and when opened you can enjoy the view of the garden. The frame of the windows is a bronze window frame that connects the cabinet with the curved bronze panel. This detail becomes a bridge to the adjacent space, transferring from the wall to the woodwork to the fireplace, to the kitchen and the butler's kitchen. The changing combination of exquisite architectural elements links all spaces together and visually connects them together. Substances play a key role in shaping the aesthetics and sensory experience of a home. Adrian's choice of warm, dark finishes creates a feeling of intimacy and sophistication. These elements coordinate with ample natural light injected through wide windows.

The architect's commitment to precision embodies every detail. The feeling of space is completely customized and is thought to be the last millimeter as precise as a Swiss Army knife. Fine woodwork lines combine with the precise connections of curved and domed ceilings that extend all the way to the sunken kitchen corner windows. It is this obsession that provides a unified language, which he calls “the generosity of embracing volume.”
