Clarendon Street House is a minimalist style villa in Thornbury, Australia, designed by Architecture Caisson. The architect did not expand the area of the house, but shifted the focus to reimagining parts of the garden to serve as a dual use of indoor and outdoor space. This is achieved by building two brick and wood structures in parallel, reminiscent of the walls of a garden. These structures are separated by glass panels, effectively blending the interior with the garden environment, while the use of polished concrete inside and out further blurs the boundaries between the two environments.
The center of this design is a spacious living area with gardens on either side, offering tranquil views and a strong connection to the outdoors. Above this area, a new section contains bedrooms, bathrooms and additional living space designed specifically for the client's children. This elevated section is accessed via a spiral steel staircase located within an elevated space, highlighting its difference from the common area below. This newly added portion strategically backs away from the original structure to allow ample natural light and a view of the surrounding garden and courtyard areas.
