Parkville House is a haven of history and family and is a 230 ㎡ detached villa. Renovated by architectural practice Placement, the latest level in the home's rich story elegantly connects the Victorian roots of the 1870s to the dynamic needs of 21st-century families. When homeowners first contacted Chief Architect, Co-Founder, and Director Jacqueline O'Brien, their brief explained the problem. As children in adolescence crave personal space, existing open-plan living arrangements need to be improved. “Our clients want spaces to promote greater privacy, independence, and more intentional public gatherings and entertainment,” explains the designer.

The highlight of this project lies in its excellent design restraint and strategic vision. The transformation seems flat, but its transformation effect is undeniable. In addition to simply meeting the needs of families in private and public areas, the transformation focuses on the sustainability aspect of the family. The existing space was reused and transformed. New insulation, heating and cooling systems were installed, and higher performance glass doors and windows were introduced. The bay window in the kitchen, in particular, is simply a feat of genius, borrowing the space of a previously dark and unused courtyard to allow the interior to bathe in the warm northern lights. Placement's masterwork shows how tiny design moves can make a huge difference — not just for a single family, but for the architecture of a community. Parkville House is not just a renovation, it's a redefinition — it shows that simple, thoughtful design can have a lasting impact.
