As the city grows more refined, people tend to go organic and relaxed. This project is a renovation of a residential interior that we made for a young couple in Shanghai. At the layout level, our primary goal is to create a “shell” that is as open as possible. Due to the previous condition of the house, we connected the house with a depth of 17 meters in the south-north direction, forming a long strip space consisting of a series of functional areas consisting of kitchen, restaurant, living room, terrace, etc. At the same time, using the bathroom as a hub, the whole house moves around, creating a layout that combines openness and accessibility.

Our exploration of organic living forms is housed in this project in this long, south-north space. This space is different from hotel rooms in that it does not require strict formal design, and even some “reverse design”. All intuitive alignment, integration, and unified design languages are excluded. Spatial order is hidden under the representation, and we use our “invisible” hands to pick up the scales, avoiding excessive design while preventing confusion of forms. We use a piecemeal styling strategy, with white walls as the background, with functional areas scattered everywhere and in different shapes, while ensuring sufficient whiteness and space for users to configure flexibly. The entire living space is as cluttered and orderly as a neighborhood. This structure-based strategy not only enriches the spatial level, but also conveys a sense of relaxation.

Another important form element in space is the exposed beam body. Because the position of the original beam is not perfectly aligned with the function area below. If the extended ceiling is aligned with the lower area, the area of the low-rise space is greatly increased. The continuity of the entire space is also broken by the ladder at the top. So we tried not to make a ceiling, exposing the beams. Equipment and piping including the top are also exposed. The partition under the beam is lowered, separating it from the top. In this way, the visual space is divided into two levels up and down.

Each of the functional areas below can be free and flexible from the constraints of the top form. The glass bricks act as a transition between the upper and lower levels of the space, while also providing some indirect light to the bathroom in the rear. In residential public spaces, the water bar, railing, and kitchen use the same wood material. There is no intentional uniformity in form. These three functional areas form an integral part of their own. The shape of the shelves weakens their expressiveness and gives the client flexibility to display their objects.

The kitchen was transformed by a sunroom. Filled with insulation material under the original glass roof and covered with a wooden ceiling, while maintaining thermal insulation, the wooden roof also creates a warm atmosphere throughout the space. This series of bedrooms, walk-in closets, bathrooms, family areas, and study forms another movement of the whole house that runs south and north. This move connects all auxiliary spaces outside the public living area. The bathroom has two doors south and north. Make a path for the whole house to form a ring road.
