The project is located in a rural village in Wuyang Town, Guangxi. The owners are parents of architects who want to build a self-built house on the original base that can accommodate the families of both parents and brothers, while following rural traditions and customs. This determined that the project was not a country villa, but a house with a ritual function at the same time.
The project follows the layout principles of the traditional residence of the local three and two aisles. The central location of the limited venue is a three-story high “Ming Hall” with ritual functions. The so-called “Ming Hall” refers to the hall of a traditional local residence without a door and is directly connected to the patio. Enter through the narrow gallery and magnify it's towering and huge. The non-everyday scale makes it possible to embody the concept of “light and blood flowing” in this highly symbolic and redundant space. Due to the short stay at home, the two brothers' families appeared in the form of small suites, located on the east west side of the second floor according to the principle of Sincerity and Child Welfare. The parent bedroom and other daily function rooms also follow the layout of “Feng Shui” around the “Ming Hall”.
The 4 courtyards next to the Ming Hall are combined with the second floor's balustrade or wall to create a space of two different atmospheres: a bright courtyard and a shady patio, with different types of sun and plant tolerance. The Ming Hall is tall and redundant; the space in the courtyard is more compact and has the meaning of an overhang. The atmosphere of the space is different from high to low, creating an alternating distance between light and dark.
The floor takes the form of an inverted beam structure, the floor edges coincide with the wall edges, do not pinch each other, and the spatial profile is clear. The floor and the wall are visually separate, producing a sense of horizontal and vertical extension, respectively. Further, on the ground floor, the same material enhances the fluidity of the space through a hidden drainage system, eliminating the indoor-outdoor height gap.
Under the eaves of the second floor, the railing of the empty “Ming Hall” is transformed into benches, the sliding windows of the second floor bedroom are further furnished, the windows are pushed open, one can sit indoors, feet on the outside, and the railing is transformed into a table for drinking tea and books. These treatments try to eliminate the opposition to the exterior of the interior, which is a fundamental element of the building An aesthetically fun response to “deep down”.
Dark, high and low, dry and wet spaces are treated evenly, allowing temperature differences to create air flow, and the whole house has a cool wind feeling. Especially the two shady patios, which are the favorite places for workers to stay during construction.
