The Grange Residence, designed by Conrad Architects, is a pure embodiment of scale, scale and light, and is a spacious family retreat in Toorak, Australia, with spectacular views of the Melbourne city skyline. Sharing Conrad Architects architects' affinity for enduring architectural principles, homeowner and interior designer Laurent Tarrant approaches the studio to design a timeless residence while emphasizing street presence and cityscapes. Council site regulations stipulate a unique elevation of elevations along each boundary, prompting Conrad Architects to pursue a minimalist form of stone partition. Each floor has meticulously detailed door and window openings that blend deep reveals and beveled windows to emphasize the formal arrangement of stylish, vertical proportions.

The layout is oriented on the central axis and vertical stair wells, creating an intuitive and rhythmic journey throughout. Much of the planning is determined by the terrain, with designers trying to emphasize the experience of entering the house, going through it, and the landscape being revealed. The ambition to celebrate the journey home became a driving principle, guiding a meticulous way of sorting spaces.

Entering the villa is through the doorway on the street, where the walled garden creates a feeling of privacy and seclusion. The entrance level of the villa was deliberately raised to create a feeling of “facing up” to the observation deck. The front of the acid-etched marble flows into the interior, intuitively through the central spine of the residence, through the outdoor terrace and the infinity pool, with a panoramic view of the entire city. The four-storey staircase of the villa is conceived as a sculptural element, suspended in the space originally arranged in a straight line. Finished in polished plaster, with skylights above, the staircase is a tool for light to enter and connect vertically, while its sinuous curves add an artistic touch to each floor.

The bedrooms are located below the entrance level, creating a quiet private space shelter, each space with access to the view. THE MASTER BEDROOM SUITES ARE SPACIOUS IN SCALE AND DECOR, WHILE THE CHILDREN'S ROOM FEATURES AN ACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT ROOM AND SUNKEN COURTYARD FOR SOCIALIZING AND ENTERTAINING. Auxiliary spaces such as a gym, steam bath and cellar are hidden in the basement, while the roof contains a spacious office and living area that extends to the outdoor terrace. Based on the values of contemporary design, Grange Residence demonstrates a commitment to the ultimate building principle of space, light and proportion.
