The inspiration and key concepts of Cloud House come mainly from two directions — our clients want a shelter-like environment, and we want to create a shelter inspired by the structures, forms, and colors inherent in nature. Through the combination of these inspirations, our goal is to create a harmonious fusion of form, function and atmosphere, ultimately providing our clients with a home that embodies their ultimate sense of privacy, tranquility, and inner connection to the natural world.

The project faced some challenges and setbacks due to its extremely narrow site, with a nearby five-story apartment building overlooking the site. One of the main design challenges is to create a sense of privacy in a limited space while maintaining a feeling of openness and spaciousness to the home. The proximity of five-story apartment buildings poses a challenge to privacy. Homeowners want a quiet, private living environment that is free from prying eyes. Therefore, it is crucial to find a solution that both allows privacy and does not sacrifice openness. Solid bricks and large overhangs combine to achieve this goal.

Dean Dyson Architects uses a heavy-duty brick-and-tile approach to acoustical and heat-value engineering and takes advantage of a sense of seclusion and protection. The main material is a custom brick profile designed by Dean Dyson Architects that covers the entire one-story building with huge glass windows. On the ground, a more open architectural style is adopted, with large areas of glass strategically guiding the landscape from the home to the private outdoor garden. The strategic location of space and curved surfaces play a key role in breaking the long-term linearity of the floor plane. Throughout the plane, these spaces and curves are carefully integrated together as openings that allow seamless visual connections between different spaces at different levels through the field of view and light. These design elements not only disrupt the linear nature of the floor plane, but also facilitate exploration and movement, attracting residents to move around the home in a smooth and comfortable way.
