Located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York, this family home is design studio Gachot's second collaboration with clients. Set in a late 19th century historic building, this 4-bedroom luxury one-story apartment is filled with the charm of the city of Manhattan. Designer Christine Gachot combines modernism with Californian coolness to create a warm, open, light-filled haven for a growing family.
When the family decided to make the Upper West Side of Manhattan as their new home, they wanted more space to accommodate the expansion of the family. The Gachot design team has previously worked with clients to create an ultra-modern apartment in SoHo, inspired by their previous experience. Customers want this design to continue the SoHo apartment's warm, contemporary style and add some subtle touches of vibrant colors. This time, the West Side design, while respecting the historic look of the property itself, combines a unique contemporary vibe, creating an ideal living environment for this family.
The kitchen is undoubtedly at the heart of this design project. For many families, the kitchen is not only a space for cooking, but also an important place for family gatherings. Designers show here their keen sense of detail. The carved glass cabinet doors display the glassware and tableware that the family treasures, and the oak interior adds a touch of warmth. At the same time, the warm white lacquered cabinet blends perfectly with the marble countertops and anti-fouling plates, forming a harmonious and elegant color combination.
In this design, the custom brass wrapped hood combines perfectly with brass faucets and handles to make the overall design more refined. Hanging in the center of the kitchen, the A331 beehive chandelier, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in 1953, adds historical thickness to the space. Gachot put a special emphasis on the use of color, incorporating a touch of life into the rainforest mosaic tiles on the kitchen island table, and a dark blue leather stool to add a touch of vitality to the space.
One of the most outstanding features of this single-family home is its open-plan layout. The designers moved the originally enclosed kitchen to a more suitable location, freeing up an open space that is spacious, bright, and full of natural light. This area is designed to be the heart of the family, not only for cooking, but also a place for family and friends to gather.
Adjacent games rooms, restaurants, living rooms and study rooms are connected by spacious openings to form a vibrant and fluid central zone. This design not only creates a warm home atmosphere, but also makes the space look more spacious and comfortable. Especially for families with small children, this open layout is very practical, facilitating interaction between family members.
In this project, Gachot carefully selected materials to enhance the warmth and texture of the space. Manuscript and hardwood floors, steel brushed doors, framed openings and wooden window frames, these materials are widely used throughout the home. Cracked white oak takes the main place, adding a gentle feeling of warmth to the entire space. In the main living room, these wooden details frame the windows into a gallery-like landscape, allowing residents to overlook the American Museum of Natural History and its surrounding greenery.
The window seat is another highlight of this house. Designers have arranged seats in front of several windows so that residents can enjoy the beauty and the changing light from the outside at any time. Transparent Roman curtains bring natural light into the room, bathed in warm white walls and ceilings, and this soft and ever-changing light infuses endless comfort throughout the space.
Perfectly blending the tranquility of modernism with the freshness of California, this exquisite luxury one-story apartment in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York is a cozy haven for families. The design of the Gachot team not only demonstrates a high sensitivity to detail, but also meets a wide range of needs of the home in terms of materials and layout. Full of modernity and retaining the unique look of the historical architecture of the Upper West District, this home is undoubtedly the ideal place to live in the city.
