Inspired by the rural style of Southern Italy, Brighton Residence is a tiered family residence that expresses its materiality through interaction with the outdoors and built-in openness. Designer Hecker Guthrie combines warmth and textural poses.

Despite being located on the waterfront, Brighton Residence has inherently “Melbourne” characteristics. Preserving key historical reminders of the family's origins as an important part of its present, while ensuring the continuation of this legacy through thoughtful weaving new things. Caroline Hedley, interior designer at Hecker Guthrie, described: “Originally built in the 1800s, this home has an Old World vibe that we wanted to highlight during the design process.” “Our way of dealing with old houses is actually to repair and upgrade,” she added. “The new decoration is a discreet addition, the important thing is that they talk to each other and have a sense of continuity.”

As with any collaboration, it is essential to extract an approach based on an understanding of the life of the residents, based on an understanding of the lives of the inhabitants, who are reimagining the space and those who intend to live in it. “Our clients at Brighton Residence are happy and vibrant partners,” says Caroline. “Having them be such an active participant in their program makes for a wonderfully harmonious design and results in intent and trust.” The initial goal of the program was to renovate and sell, but this approach took another approach after a European vacation, where the long-term legacy and bloodline of the house as a heirloom inspired a new determination to have the house acquired and represented by its custodian.

Initially starting in 2018, after “years of design changes and iterations, customers invited a popular change in direction,” recalls Caroline. “Inspired by their tour of Italy and the unpretentious architecture and relaxed lifestyle, clients want to bring that feeling back to Melbourne.” When combining existing traditional elements of a home with the addition of new architecture, the focus of the modification is on creating a dwelling that lasts — one that is cohesive and fixed in its place, a place that is important to the custodians of memory — that becomes a new source of inspiration.
