Homeowner·Self-description
“For many years, I have asked countless people where their hometowns are, and most do not know what the clouds are. For many, their hometown is a piece of cloth that must be thrown away; it is as if they had not forgotten that it was difficult for them to fly higher and go farther. A 40-minute drive from Nanjing to the airport, there is a unique natural ecological village of Chunpu. The village's stone roads are winding, stone houses have fallen, tea gardens and food fields surround the big mountain, and the villagers still follow the ancient sunrise and sunset. A few decades ago, I spent a distant and long childhood there, going out to the mountains to study as a teenager, and then spent half my life and bussed in a foreign country. In 2006, during a visit to his homeland, he was moved to commission local construction workers to renovate a house on the base of the house, which had not been used for more than a decade.
In The Golden Age, Wang Xiaobo said, “The places where we are going are the hometowns that have never been met.” But for me, my first half life has gone too far. I've run out of time, years have passed, and I don't want to force myself to blend in with the bustling world anymore. On the other side of the ocean, my wife and I lived the simplest and purest life. Almost all of my time was spent growing flowers, raising fish, walking, climbing mountains, tending the garden and tidying up the yard.
But I always think back to the past. I remember the old house I lived in as a child, I think of burning wood, my mother preparing a meal for a family in front of the stove, I remember watching adults go up the mountain to harvest in the hazy rain... the days were poor and bleak. Today, three thousand kilometers from the homeland, love is more than just the scenery of the homeland. I see that parents in the distance are high, old friends know how to make ends meet, and the roads of the past are so wide. Maybe life is a practice, and no matter how far you go, you end up back where you started.
I think it's time to go home.
Architecture·Landscape
The growth of buildings cannot be separated from the “genes” of the surrounding natural environment and must have the characteristics of “vitality”. In the winter of 2019, when the homeowner invited the designer and other friends to visit the project, the house, which was built more than ten years ago, fell into disrepair. Due to neglect and non-compliance of the construction, many places begin to deform and sink, the foundation of the houses is not deep, the underground is all stone blocks, the walls are damp and water...
The complex hillside environment greatly increases the difficulty of building transformation. After repeated research and scientific calculations, especially considering the high difficulty of construction and transportation, the final solution is to continue the previous building framework, reinforcing and repairing the house on the original foundation. It can be said that it is an extremely challenging design that integrates from the exterior of the building to the interior space. Combining the plan's environment and homeowners' pleas, we define this house as a “house that grows in the mountains,” like the buds the homeowner planted 15 years ago, reliving life and vitality today after a long slumber. — It must be a Chinese-style expression, a localized memory, a local response, a rustic and gentle habitat. It stands on the ridge of the mountain, as if it were standing in an empty village, in the raging clouds, in a quiet mountain stream, in a penny-like past.
The overall construction skin is made of modern pressed earth, the walls are cut in place, and the use of a large amount of rock from the mountains is both respectful of traditional craftsmanship and a belief in the spirit of the village. The rough texture is like a trace of time, simple and firm, like the tenacity and strength of generations that this village has nurtured for centuries. The greenness of the earthy exterior walls, boulders and roofed floors weakens the new house's opacity. For a considerable time thereafter, it will coexist with mountain wildlife, and be exposed to wind, sun, rain, and slowly become part of the mountain under natural erosion and flushing — these subtle perceptual associations, as stated by Shimto in Valls: “The building is in the mountains. In the middle; the building emerges from the mountains; the buildings are not destroyed by the mountains.”

If you say that the building is original and rustic, then the interior space is quiet and pure. The house itself has a unique natural landscape, before the reservoir is filled with smoke, and then the mountains are green and rain-drenched. However, there are many structurally complex beams in their original form. The uneven proportions of the roof, doors, and windows make the space extremely closed, and the lack of interaction and connection between the inside and outside leads to a more oppressive feeling and physical sensation.
First of all, we made adjustments to the structure. The jumbled beams could not be changed due to support reasons. Due to the random borrowing, we made a slope on the original structure, combining the original structure form with hidden equipment and lighting system to form a more compact block. After remodeling, choose to cover with low-saturation microcement, and the space will be twisted from loose redundancy to a fresh, pale state. “The history of architecture is the history of fighting for light, the history of fighting for windows,” Kirby said. In this project, we want solid walls, dimpled windows, and a more timely channel to present the outside landscape. Windows that block out some of the climate elements, such as rain, cold, etc., also provide more options for people to connect with nature.
The renovated space has excellent views and views. The interior presents a clear air feeling, and the light travels away from the distance. LINEN CLOTH, OLD WOOD, POTTERY LAMP, AND THE AMBIENT SKY ARE ALL RELAXING. Furniture and items are placed in a seemingly casual manner in accordance with the homeowner's daily use. Decorativeness is as refined as possible. Whether functional requirements or the atmosphere of space points to a pure, clean and comfortable atmosphere. Cross the street and come to the tea room, the space machine is small and simple, so that nothing else is needed except table and chairs. It is the homeowner's favorite place on weekdays, making a pot of hot tea, flipping two pages of idle books, or just looking out the window... The mountains are lush, the sunset is like a fire, some are happy, some walk in the forest, and the days are slow and relaxing. The restaurant is located on the negative first floor. During the renovation, due to the lack of depth of the original foundation, workers accidentally dug some of the rock bodies under the advice of the owner, they were preserved completely.
Once processed, the naked mountain body becomes a device, an imagination, a realistic representation of country love. They are gently incorporated into the space, and the space itself coexists with the mountain, bringing to mind what Bashra describes: “We build our homes poetically, the houses build us spiritually.”
The main bed is quiet and the elevated ground area was expanded later, dividing the space and extending the visual sensation. The floor-to-ceiling windows allow the view to focus on the mountains and focus on life itself. “Life is the sea, the mountains and the river, but Rell.” For the homeowner, this is about the ideal way to live, to have a safe house, a sense of small things, and a place of peace to be able to revisit the long-lost self.
