Cove House sees the exploration of thresholds and transitional experiences through material expression. Justin Humphrey Architects created a home with rich tactile elements using passive design principles.
Located along the waterfront in the south of Brisbane, Australia, Cove House is an experiment in space and form planning that cleverly breaks traditional residential patterns. Through an exploration of the edge and transition experience, Justin Humphrey Architects uses different materials and surfaces to express these moments. On all interfaces between the entrance and inside and out is a series of carefully carved courtyards that let speckled natural light through natural and architectural elements gather together. The owner's intentional connection to the water and landscape is a priority.
Under a single floating roof line, all four sides of the house are within the site boundary, and the house is uniquely able to interact with the community on its three sides. Through its substance and plantings, this embossed edge allows pedestrians to have different unusual contacts with home outside the unique streetscape front. The choice of solid concrete combined with warm wood further adds to the connection through their contrasting properties. Then, the fine conical roof sits on top of the concrete wall, providing a sense of support and another way of expression at the intersection.
The customer's passion for subtropical architecture is the catalyst for the final form and the relationship between interior and exterior space. When approaching, the garden room becomes the first threshold between private and public, softening the transition. The enclosed space contrasts sharply with the elements of open sky, water and subtropical landscape. These garden spaces are then dotted throughout, continuing a series of relaxing moments of the traditional enclosed residential type.
