Child Studio was commissioned to build a residence for a London hostel operator and restaurant owner with a special focus on spaces for dining, parties and entertainment. Hidden in a historic stables courtyard in the centre of London's Mayfair, this secluded venue offers designers a blank canvas. “This project was inspired by the Grand Salon of Yves Saint Laurent, located on the rue de Babilne in Paris. We are interested in finding a true design language for this project that balances decorative art references with 1960s and '70s modernism,” Child Studio's Che Huang and Alexy Kos commented.
“The spacious living room is a social space where guests can gather in a warm and relaxing environment. Here, we bring together a collection of 20th century furniture with collectible value, complemented by unique sculptures and art books, creating a relaxed and livable atmosphere. Designers wrap the space in a series of carefully crafted wooden book walls, breaking down the interior into different areas, including lounges, restaurants, and study areas. The focus of the spacious lounge is the magnificent rolling fireplace located under the linear skylight. The soft curves are carved with polished plaster, creating a soft and airy atmosphere. “This fireplace is designed to bring a sense of scale and permanence to the space,” Huang and Kos explain. “It's amazing to see how its soft geometric shapes respond to changes in light throughout the day.”
Tactile materiality is supported by furniture: Ingo Maurer's exquisite Japanese paper lamp is placed on a white Calacatta Viola marble edge table. Medieval antiques, such as Bruno Mathsson's Pernilla lounge chair, curved wood Caprani floor lamp and leather armchair by Danish master Kristian Vedel, surround a large asymmetrical maple coffee table designed by Huang and Kos in the warm tones of the iconic Eames screen. The private dining area consists of custom-made library cabinets topped with dark red Rosso Levanto marble. It is separated from the kitchenette by a glass brick partition, allowing sunlight to filter gently through the geometric pattern. “The material palette of this room is inspired by Adolf Loos's modernist villa Muller,” explains the designer.
“The combination of dark peach heart wood, patterned marble and green interior makes it feel very chic, warm and simple.” Velvet dining chairs designed by Charlotte Perriand go well with the rare antique “Uchiwa” branch chandelier designed by Ingo Maurer — a handmade lamp made of overlapping large fans suspended on a bamboo stand. Custom round maple tables are custom-designed by the studio, while hand-knotted wool rugs with gradient patterns come from Child Studio's carpet series designed for Bauhaus sports.
Hidden behind the bookshelves is the owner's study. This quiet space is dedicated to focused work, with a variety of sculptures, objects, books and art collections arranged on this serene bookshelf. These artworks include antique stone prints by George Braque, Jean Vallector, and Karel Apel, and photographs by Guy Burdin and Man Ray. The wooden walls are decorated with brass wall lamps in Danish acid treatment from the 1960s. Other retro accessories include floor lamps from pioneering Italian manufacturer Stilnovo and 1960s desk lamps by Spanish modernist Pedro Martín. “There is a subtle change in the atmosphere between the spacious lounge and the more private adjoining rooms,” comments the designer, “but the whole place is unified by carefully crafted wooden details and warm materials.”
