Originally built by the client's father in the 1970s, Georgina Courtyard Villa in Melbourne is the latest version of the villa and adds contemporary relevance on a foundation of deep-rooted design principles. As in any family home, the nostalgic atmosphere is deeply rooted in a space imprinted with memories of many years. In the process of upgrading the home to its current version, the house is a celebration of its past and future, enabling customers to feel refreshed as adults in the home they grew up in. Templeton Architecture brings a bold and carefully curated focus to add to the existing, combining a fresh interior palette and an external connection to the landscape.
The Georgina Courtyard Villa is surrounded by similar homes with historical value, which is an established structure in the street view. To enhance this sense of presence, additional construction takes a less traditional approach. The new form does not add a rear, but rather pulls the existing silhouette further into the front yard and landscape space. In redefining the appearance of the house, the refreshment defines the external form, with the opening being a balance of external privacy and internal openness.
Due to its structural features and aesthetic quality, original brickwork is a key feature of the home. Matching with the original brickwork, the family saw contemporary softening — new elements designed to balance existing and contemporary features, bringing a cohesive calm. With consistent cool tones and a variety of grays and whites, the home feels connected and consistent from the front door to every interior space. Although the house has been adjusted to adapt to a more modern occupation, the essence of the original house is still present and is emphasized by the continued use of textures and brick elements.
