The Marthaz residence is the home of an archaeologist, so its design uses original handmade techniques that aim to unify time, form and background through the composition and substance of its ancestral origin. Located in the Mexican town of La Misión, between Ensenada and Rosarito, the landscape there becomes intense due to the type of tourist architecture. The land area is 15 x 40 meters and sits on rough and uneven terrain.
The building plan envisages the creation of a retirement home for the couple Martha and Bill, as well as a design art space. A simple development plan and minimal intervention integrate the building with the site. The three volumes embedded in the venue form a staggered dialogue, facing the Pacific landscape according to the central axis.
The first level is divided into two zones, the visitor area consists of two rooms, the study area can serve as a painting and carpentry workshop or garage. The second floor is the heart of the house: take the stairs to an open space consisting of a recreation room, restaurant and kitchen, as well as large floor-to-ceiling windows and curtains woven with salt. The texture of this material also avoids the intrusion of strong winds and protects the privacy of the interior by casting light from the curtain gap through the interior onto the walls. Behind the party area, there is a staircase leading to the third floor where the main hall is located, where you can see the surrounding landscape, in this space, the boundaries of the interior and exterior are blurred. The appearance and shaping of the Marthaz residence has a deep sensitivity and respect for the surrounding environment. The main building element is compacted earth, so the site and its surface are combined as raw materials for the project.
