Overlooking Lake Lugano, between the woods and the shoulder, we were asked to transform an existing building built in the 1950s. On the somewhat compact property, you can see two spaces built at either end — a vacation home on one side, a pier with a garage on the other, and two large trees next to it. The concept is simple, with a series of spaces optimized for short breaks, momentary breaths, similar to the experience of staying in a private hotel.
Due to the nature of the project, we must make full use of every inch of available space. You can find an outdoor porch, an open living room with a kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom, all designed according to the outdoor space. A fundamental decision was to repair and highlight the stone basement in which the property is located, a typical representation of historic architecture along the shores of Lake Lugano. The stone was extracted from a cave by the lake and its uniqueness is that the cave no longer exists. Thanks to the large glass panel, the interior space seems to always extend to the garden and the lake.
Building materials emphasize the relationship with the elements, wooden floors and walls praise the trees, and the stones evoke the waters of the lake. Each level is connected by a series of ramps that guide residents from under the parking lot to the lakeside. A cement wall leads residents to a hidden entrance that protects the road behind.
