As a unique solidity in an existing coastal setting, Wren House is a thoughtful collection of different textures. Wolveridge Architects reimagines the traditional response to the place and is influenced by Japanese architectural culture to surround the family home to create a warm and rich living space.
Within walking distance of nearby Mount Masha Beach, Wren House uses its developer and architect-led approach to realize thoughtful constraints on budgets while reinventing traditional coastal architecture approaches. Beachfront dwellings tend to be lightweight and open, and greater sensitivities are embedded into the final dwelling by observing harsh environmental conditions and the effects of wind and potential erosion. Starting with a brick base, the traditional wooden weatherboard houses were abandoned and replaced by more solid and sturdy materials, ensuring a protective and peaceful shelter.
Inspired by Tokyo's Yoshio Taniguchi Okura Hotel, this residence embodies the surprising and unexpected feel of its location. WITH ITS FOCUS ON THE LIGHTNESS OF MATTER AND THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT, IT TAKES IT BACK TO THE ERA OF SATURATED INTERIOR TONES AND LAYERED MATERIALS OF THE 1960S RATHER THAN ADOPTING A MORE ECONOMICAL APPROACH.
Centered on the interior patio, the dedicated outdoor space allows natural ventilation and sunlight to permeate the entire space while also connecting with nature. With the pouring of floors at an entire level, it is expected that the house will become an ideal place to age on site, and the convenience of transitioning inside and out to direct views is a key consideration. The courtyard also serves as a kind of protected shelter, connected to the outside, but also sheltered from the prevailing winds. WHEN BALANCING ECONOMIES OF SCALE AND CREATING A UNIQUE HOME, EVERY DETAIL IS CONSIDERED TO ENSURE THE RIGHT MATERIALS ARE CONSISTENT WITH THEIR FUNCTIONS AND OVERALL PLAN.
