Located in Turramurra, New South Wales, Turramurra Threads transforms existing Victorian cottages into modern and tasteful family homes. The original front street frontage was restored, giving only a glimpse of the two new modern rear pavilions offered by the street.
The original single-storey cottage is disconnected from its back slope garden, so utilization is low. Now, a series of living platforms blend into the landscape where it resides, walking down a gently sloping site, containing activities that “gaze” at each other and celebrate the natural environment. A pair of arches, one existing and one new, make up the entry point for each zone. The central living and kitchen area is located between the courtyard and garden, below the bedroom, above the lower deck and the pool area, creating a central catchment area for young families. A “service area” including the kitchen, storage room and laundry defines the southern side of the living area, while deep awnings, high ceilings and slatted screens protect the interior from western sunlight. Bathing in a calm atmosphere and ample natural facilities, connecting the new and old central courtyard invites diffused light and east wind through the space.
In the backyard, the entertainment platform is connected by a set of sloping stone steps that guide residents past an existing bluebell tree. This sense of movement is reinforced at the completion of the project. In the linear lines of the new flooring, lining and slatted screens, the interior palette combines neutral tones with a soft sense of rhythm. Soft light shines through the west gate, north-facing courtyard and south-facing skylight, allowing light to play on the subtle texture of the day.
