In Singapore, Studio iF's renovation of this terraced villa retains the characteristics and spirit of the original residence and has made a new intervention aimed at cultivating a relaxed enjoyment of living. The 320 ㎡ house is part of four red brick houses originally designed by an architect for himself and his large family. Studio iF focuses on restoring the design of the house to its original state with updated material palettes.
Customers love to travel, but also enjoy a good time at home with close family and friends. After living in their first home for a while, they decided to start a family so wanted to move to a bigger house with more outdoor space. Customers fell in love with the inner spirit of the house — the curved geometric interior, the red brick, the antique back garden and the surrounding house. They want the new home to draw inspiration from 1970s aesthetics and capture the charm and quaint quality of the back garden and the houses behind it. To maintain this connection, designers bring the living space closer and connect the interior and the exterior.
The restaurant has many poetic and sculptural qualities, embodied in the fine detail and light of materials and light. For dry kitchens, designers match the color of red tiles with red ceramic tiles, blending in with other shades of the home. ALSO ENJOY THE SPACIOUSNESS OF THE HOUSE, WHICH GIVES IT A LUXURIOUS QUALITY OF LIFE. The gaps between the different spaces are well balanced, so no space feels too narrow or empty. The flexible design allows customers to move and experiment with different furniture and indoor plants, and provides ample room to grow.
The partition between the living room and the restaurant is customized to hide the sewer pipe, provide additional storage space, and serve as a reference point for the space. From the point of view of the living space, the restaurant and garden are perfectly framed by the opening of the partition, and vice versa, creating a highly differentiated space experience. Designers also customized the TV console in the master bedroom to celebrate the multiple material representations of laminate, often used instead of natural materials. Each leg on the console bench takes the iconic shape of a natural material.
Starting with the original house, Studio iF uses a controlled black and white palette with accentuated red brick tones. WHILE RETAINING SOME OF THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURAL CURVATURE INSIDE AND OUT, THE DESIGNER CREATED AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION BY EXPLORING THE CONCAVE CURVES OF THE RESTAURANT. The designer also built a single-storey extension to make the most of the back garden and designed it into a sunroom where the frame glass of the garden can be seen from the walls.
Customers also want to move the furniture from their first house into a new house, so we work with them to select new furniture that will fit perfectly with their existing furniture. The result is a mixture of modern classics and contemporary pieces, giving the family more depth and timeless character.
