When renovating an old house, it is often a challenge to infuse modern design while preserving the traditional style. In this article, we will explore how an old 36-storey penthouse apartment on Hunan South Road, Shanghai, has successfully transformed a living space that is both beautiful and practical through ingenious spatial planning and design concepts, and shows how it blends into the design elements of the silent spirit.
For an old apartment of 36 floors, space planning is crucial. The designers removed the original non-bearing walls, allowing the greenery outside the window to flow in a flash, expanding the view of the entire space. The visual axis in the west direction is unobstructed, while the south-north direction forms a natural zoning with the fireplace as the separation between the restaurant and the living room.
Such an open design not only enhances the flow of light, but also makes the movement of lines in the home more flexible. THE DESIGN OF THE PUBLIC SPACE ELIMINATES THE PARTITIONS OF THE PHYSICAL WALLS, THE MULTIPLE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE BAR COUNTER, KITCHEN, LIVING ROOM AND RESTAURANT, GIVING THE SPACE EXTREMELY HIGH FLEXIBILITY AND INTERACTIVITY.
This renovation of the old house follows the philosophy of “old as old”. The original green bricks were demolished and used again in the construction of the fireplace, leaving the texture of the bricks and traces of kiln firing. As you walk up the stairs, you can still feel the touch of these histories, as if passing through time and feeling the traces of the years.
The wooden beams of the main living room have also retained their original structure and have not been re-roofed. Such a design makes the whole space more homely. To harmonize with the style of the wooden beam, the designers chose materials such as smoky wood, black brushed oak and linen fabrics that perfectly combine nature and history, creating a tranquil atmosphere of silence.
Traditional dwellings tend to emphasize the clear division of the area, but this 36 floor residence breaks that restriction. Designers create multi-dimensional interactive spaces, where living rooms, restaurants, bar counters and study all interact through open design. Stairs are connected to the floor so that the upstairs and downstairs public areas are seamlessly connected.
Such a design not only improves space utilization, but also facilitates communication between family and family. Reduce the use of physical walls, allowing each occupant to feel more freedom and involvement in this space.
In design, the use of natural light often brings unexpected results. The roof of the second floor has a skylight that allows natural light to flow in and blends perfectly with the elements of the space. Light shades change over time, bringing a flexible beauty to the interior.
Hunan Road is a busy old town area with low floors and red tile roofs and tall pine trees can be seen from the windows. Ample light and warmth make the whole home look brighter and more comfortable during the day, and let those who live in it feel natural.
The choice of material is also crucial in this design. To create a natural, rustic feel, the designers chose wood floors with scars and sandstones treated with acid. The wooden finish of the whole house is apple wood and has been treated with smoke. The transparent wood wax oil preserves the natural texture of the wood and interacts with the clay texture of the wall paint.
The treatment of the walls fully respects the texture of the material, and the mottling sensation under the rays of the light forms a strong contrast with the texture of the brick wall, further enhancing the natural atmosphere. Earthlike calm and black furniture add layers and visual balance to the space.
This 36-storey penthouse renovated project combines modern comfort with a sense of history through sophisticated spatial planning, use of materials and light design. Designers successfully preserved the charm of vintage in this space, while incorporating the practicality and comfort of modern life. If you also want to renovate your old house into an ideal residence with a modern feel and a trace of history, look for inspiration and explore more possibilities in this project.
