In a hidden gem in Brussels, Decancq Vercruysse built a large, poetic minimalist apartment for an international lawyer. The lawyer often travels around the world, making this residence his second home in Belgium, complementing his main residence on the Belgian coast. He wanted the apartment to meet the needs of a family home, shared with his wife, and even a brother or child, while maintaining the uniqueness and authenticity of the design. Once the Birkendale Institute of Surgery, this building was designed by renowned Belgian architect Jean-Baptiste Dewin in 1905 and has undergone centuries of transformation and is now an elegant living space.
At the heart of this transformation is “poetic minimalism”, emphasizing the coexistence of texture and function. Decancq Vercruysse creates an open space that meets the needs of modern living while preserving the original framework of Art Nouveau architecture. The design presents a simple yet emotional aesthetic, allowing residents to find peace in their busy daily lives.
Originally used as a surgical institute, the building has undergone a clever transformation by designers to redesign the corridor structure into a modern living space. The high ceilings and spacious entrance are the main advantages of this renovation.
Historic buildings with urban memory and unique architectural features, such as high space and excellent lighting, are hard-to-replicate advantages in modern transformations.
This international lawyer wants privacy and social functions at home at the same time. The design team meets these needs through clever space planning:
The designers use flexible furniture and multi-layer lighting design to allow the space to freely transform according to different scenes.
Poetic minimalism seeks to “remove excess” and preserve a “sense of warmth”, which is fully manifested in this apartment:
Suitable for. This design style is not only simple, but also easy to maintain, perfect for a family living environment.
Designers also take into account the long-term needs of households, choosing durable and easy-to-clean materials, and incorporating smart home technologies such as intelligent management of lighting and temperature control.
This transformation of Decancq Vercruysse is not just a design case, but an interpretation of a lifestyle. Combining a poetic minimalist design philosophy with the advantages of historic architecture, this large apartment offers residents a unique living experience. Such works not only satisfy the diverse needs of the owners, but also inject a new force into interior design in Belgium.
